Gearbox already teased that the level cap would definitely be raised with the next DLC, but it's still not known what it will be raised TO; even after the announcement of the third DLC, "The Secret Armory of General Knoxx".
The latest downloadable content pack is promised to be the largest yet, with a new environment, new enemies, items, and guns (and a level cap increase from level 50!). The Secret Armory of General Knoxx appears to be tailored to challenge players "from around level 34 to level 50" according to Gearbox's announcement. No pricing or extra details are available yet, but the DLC will be available for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
You may have hit the end of the road with leveling in Borderlands; but the road looks to be getting an extension in an upcoming third installment of DLC. Gearbox designer Jason "haTts" Reiss posted on the official forum that the level cap would be raised in the soon-to-be-announced DLC. The current highest level one can achieve is level 50.
His post reads: "Sorry, I haven’t gotten to post on the forums in a while! After finalizing Zombies DLC, the team and I began reading the DLC feedback around the forums on the wants and desires. Guess what, level cap increase anyone? Got it and it's awesome. Hopefully we can get a full announcement out to you guys soon but, man is this the biggest DLC we have made. So don’t worry, we are working really hard right now on both the update (that solves a bunch of issues) and the DLC. More to come guys!!"
Gearbox claimed "people are going to be surprised when they find out how quickly we're coming [with DLC], and with what content we're coming." before it's release for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in October '09, and they have made good on their claims with the release of two DLC since; "The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned" in November and "Mad Moxxi's Underdome" in December/January.
More details are expected in the near/semi-near future. The previous DLC sold for $10 each.
Hot on the heels of Borderlands first DLC, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, Gearbox revealed another upcoming DLC, Mad Moxxi's Underdome.
The new content pack will have three Riot Arena's filled with baddies (and loot!) and even feature a bank to store spare weapons. The DLC will also give two more skill points as rewards for quest and add new rules such as vampire mode or low gravity mode. Like the previous DLC, Mad Moxxi's Underdome can be played in single-player mode and cooperatively online.
According to Gearbox's Jon Hemingway, designer of the DLC on the arena quests:
"This is totally different [than the game]...basically the idea is that we have this character, Moxxi. She's running this underground coliseum tournament arena thing. The best thing you could compare it to is either Horde mode in 'Gears of War 2' or Firefight mode in 'ODST.' But even those don't quite sum it up.
"It's all about this crazy Moxxi character, and she's running these tournaments. You go in and fight waves and rounds of monsters, and then she starts changing it all up. She throws out what are called 'Moxxi Maxims,' these rules that dramatically change the way the game play. She'll be like, 'Vampire Rule!' which makes it so that the player's health is constantly draining, but every time you get a kill you get a whole bunch of health back. Now all the players are like, 'Holy crap, I have to play amazingly aggressive,' so you have to charge in before you basically bleed out. Another example, she'll go 'Shotgun Challenge,' where all shotguns do bonus damage and all other guns take a penalty."
and on gameplay:
"There's a small tournament and a big tournament. The small tournament takes probably about an hour, and most people will be able to get through that. The big tournament...one of the things people have been asking for is for something that challenges them, and that's what the big tournament is. I think the last time I went through it, it took me six hours to get through a big tournament. You can't save your progress, you have to do it in one sitting, but you can stop, walk away from it and come back. It's really hardcore. To get through the big tournament, you'll have to get some friends who are very good and you'll all have to plan out what people are going to do and what weapons you're bringing."
Borderlands players can expect the new addition post-Christmas on December 29th for Xbox 360 and PS3, with no announced date yet for PC. It will set you back 800 Microsoft Points ($10) or $9.99 on the PSN.
Gearbox announced that Borderlands had "the fastest-selling original property video game launch of 2009." Though it is not a Modern Warfare 2 by far, NPD puts sales figures at 418,000 for Xbox 360 and 113,000 for the Playstation 3.
A PC Patch was released today addressing issues such as characters lost skill points, voicechat, server browser population times and more (details below) and the games' first expansion, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, with a cornucopia of zombies and science experiment baddies, available for PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 24. The expansion will eventually be available for PC playing compadres but it is not known when. This will be the first of at least TWO promised expansion DLCs.
