It's not a little known fact that Japan loves their Final Fantasy. The latest game in the epic series, however has sold 1 million copies in its first day of sales in the little island across the sea. These numbers don't include the PS3 "Lightning Bundle" available, which are also expected to have sold substantial numbers.
Square Enix shipped two million copies of the game, but there is not expected to be any shortages. In comparison, New Super Mario Bros. for Wii sold 900,000 units in its first WEEK.
Final Fantasy XIII will be available March 9, 2010 in North America (and Europe, Australia) and will be the first in the series to be released on Xbox 360 as well as the Playstation.

Playstation 3 owners have come to terms with having to install their PS3 games. Final Fantasy enthusiasts will get a pleasant surprise with Final Fantasy XIII when they realize it doesn't include hard disk installation.
According to game director Motomu Toriyama, the developer concentrated on low load times throughout the process and the only time a player will see a load is going between a town and a field.
This only affects the PS3 version of the game, as this will be the first time a Final Fantasy title will be coming to Xbox 360 as well (and doesn't have mandatory hard disk installation on their games anyway).
Final Fantasy XIII will be released in Japan this December, and everyone else in the world will see it Spring 2010. Japan will also be getting limited edition FFXIII PS3 bundles.
Announced at a Final Fantasy Premiere Party, Final Fantasy XIII will be released in Japan on December 12, 2009. It will release internationally in Spring 2010, allowing little time for localization work, not to mention porting the game to the Xbox 360.
Company president Yoichi Wada acknolwedged, "In the past, it's taken a year or half a year to release our games abroad," he said, "but this time we are aiming for an international release this Spring." More details on the International release will be upcoming.
Sony Chairmon and Group CEO Kaz Hirai also spoke about the legendary relationship between Final Fantasy and the Playstation, and announced that there would be a FFXIII-specific bundle for the PS3 coming sometime in the near future.
Producer Yoshinori Kitase estimates that the version of the upcoming Final Fantasy 13 is about 70% done for the Xbox 360. The game is running on the system but has yet to begin the debugging procses. The Japanese version for the Playstation is estimated to be about 90% done, allowing them to begin to wrap it up and focus on overseas versions.
The Xbox 360 version will likely be on 3 discs. In comparison, Square Enix's Lost Odyssey shipped on four dual layer DVDs in 2008.
The voice work for the English version has been completed. The voice dubbing is not yet available on the new level of demos due to lip syncing detailing that has yet to be completed.
Final Fantasy XIII was previously a PS3 exclusive, but (as you can see) the English version will now be made for the Xbox 360 as well. Final Fantasy XIII was originally expected to be released Fall 2009, but it was announced at E3 2009 that it would be available in Spring 2010 worldwide.
