Last week, Capcom promised that the new Alternative Edition would be available for Xbox 360 and PS3 in the form of DLC. The new content won't be available exclusively as DLC, though, as Capcom announced the Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition.
The Gold Edition will includea hard copy the two new episodes, costumes, and a Mercenaries Mode Refresh with 8 new playable characters called "Mercenaries Reunion". The first of the new episodes, "Lost in Nightmares" will follow Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield's investigation of Umbrella founder Ozwell Spencer in his hideaway. It will also include the original game and run for $49.99.
An additional 2 hours is expected from the new gameplay which will also support both single-player and co-op play.
This first episode and first costume pack will be available February 17th for Xbox 360 and February 18th for PS3 as DLC. The second episode and another costume pack will be ready on March 3rd for Xbox 360 and March 4th for PS3. Europe shares the same DLC release days. The Gold Edition will retail on March 12th.
Capcom revealed there would be new content coming for Resident Evil 5 back in September. The only question was how that content would be coming. Capcom put a poll up on their website, looking for feedback. The tallies are in from some over 1500 voters, and the new Alternative Edition for RE5 will be coming as DLC.
"Based on your feedback, in North American, European and Australia territories, Capcom will be making the new RE5 content for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 available as downloadable content," Capcom's Chris Kramer wrote. "You will not be asked to purchase a new copy of the game just to get at the new stuff, just make sure to hold on to your RE5 disc and you'll be ready to roll in Spring 2010 when we make available new Resident Evil adventures (and some other things we haven't told you about yet) for you."
Japan will still be getting a boxed version of the additional content involving Chris Redfield's and Jill Valentine's assault in Ozwell Spencer's horror-filled castle (an event that took place three years ago), and major plot point for RE5. An additional 2 hours is expected from the new gameplay which will also support both single-player and co-op play.
There is no word on how/when/if PC players will be receiving the Alternative Edition.
Capcom will be joining the 7th Annual Toronto Zombie Walk in order to promote the upcoming Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles. On Saturday, October 24th, Capcom will set up a tent and will be giving free Resident Evil zombie makeovers to those participating in the walk.

Capcom is taking fan requests into consideration for additional DLC for Resident Evil 5. According to president of strategic planning and business development Christian Svensson "We're talking about it. I don't know if you have seen some of the threads on Capcom Unity, but questions came up on whether we are going to do any more."
"I asked what people would want to see and that spawned a thread that was literally hundreds of posts long and had tens of thousands of views."
"I mentioned that thread to the team and we have discussed it ever since. So I will leave it at that."
The last DLC for Resident Evil 5 included a "Versus" multiplayer mode released shortly after the game. Capcom stated it was "beyond the initial scope of the game", but was ill-received by fans who believed it should have been part of the game.
Capcom has confirmed a US ship date of September 15th for the PC version of Resident Evil 5. One of the most compelling features of the version for the PC is the support for Nvidia Geforce 3D technology.
