Arelion Unveils New DWDM Route, Strengthening Network Footprint in Mexico

As the demand for data centers continues to surge in Mexico, particularly to support its thriving manufacturing and ICT sectors, Arelion has announced a strategic network expansion. This initiative connects its point of presence (PoP) at KIO QRO1 in Querétaro to KIO MEX 5 in Tultitlán and KIO MEX2 CDMX in Santa Fe, Mexico City.

Network Infrastructure and Services

Arelion is renowned for providing internet services to 125 countries, facilitating connections for over 700 cloud, security, and content providers. This expansion enhances its capabilities in delivering low-latency connectivity essential for businesses heavily reliant on digital infrastructure.

The company’s infrastructure includes a robust IP backbone and a private Cloud Connect service that links directly to major cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, and Oracle Cloud across North America, Europe, and Asia.

Design and Benefits of the Expansion

This network expansion utilizes fully underground fiber construction to deliver superior transmission capabilities, prioritizing scalability, availability, and resiliency. Arelion claims that the new route connecting Tultitlán and Querétaro will provide the fastest and lowest-latency path between these two markets. This is crucial for customers requiring efficient connectivity for artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud services, and content applications.

This development also enhances the reliability of access for Mexican users to key data center hubs and growing technology markets in the United States. Arelion’s ongoing efforts bolster its presence within Mexico, which also includes a route established from Monterrey to Querétaro, aimed at strengthening local content ecosystems and supporting global cloud, media, and gaming providers.

Market Context and Future Projections

Querétaro currently accounts for 15% of the total data center footprint in Mexico. Analysts project that the region will see the establishment of 73 data centers by 2029. Mexico City, with a metropolitan population of 22.8 million, is leading the growth in the country’s data center market, which is anticipated to reach 469.5 megawatts by 2030, largely driven by digital transformation initiatives from financial institutions. Additionally, the new route will provide interconnection with Arelion’s metro network and the thriving content ecosystem in Querétaro.

Timeline and Future Developments

Arelion plans to launch the new route in late Q2, employing next-generation open line systems and 400G coherent pluggable optics to support the expected terabit-scale traffic.

Edison De Leon, Arelion’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasized the significance of this investment, stating that it enhances local and global customers’ access to a comprehensive ecosystem of content and cloud applications. He noted the substantial demand for terabit-scale capacities in the region, affirming that this resilient and scalable infrastructure will facilitate economic growth and digital transformation in Mexico’s burgeoning technology markets.

Comprehensive Connectivity Solutions

Arelion offers a wide range of connectivity services including scalable IP Transit, Wavelengths, Dedicated Internet Access, Cloud Connect, Global 40G Ethernet Virtual Circuit, and DDoS Mitigation services, catering to service providers, content providers, and enterprises alike.
