Capcom Announces New Okami Sequel, Apart from Okamiden
During The Game Awards, Hideki Kamiya and Capcom revealed they are working on a sequel to the beloved Okami franchise. Although details remain scarce as the project is in early development, a recent discussion with the creative team provided insights into the game’s direction and narrative continuities.
Developer Insights on the Sequel’s Storyline
According to an interview with Kamiya, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata, the upcoming Okami title is set to continue the story established in the original game. However, this statement raises questions about the role of the portable entry, Okamiden, which was released on the Nintendo DS in 2011.
Exclusion of Okamiden from the Continuity
IGN’s Rebekah Valentine asked Hirabayashi if Okamiden would be acknowledged in the new sequel. He indicated that while the DS game garnered a dedicated fan base, it also faced criticism for not aligning with expectations. Consequently, the team views the new title as a return to the “original base Ōkami,” rather than a reference to a divisive sequel.
We are aware that Okamiden has its supporters and critics. However, our focus is on advancing the core narrative from the original Okami. That’s how we intend to position this sequel.
Differences from Previous Titles
Despite Okamiden being a direct sequel set right after the original, the gameplay followed a different protagonist and was structured around various gameplay mechanics that differed from Okami’s essence. This creates an interesting contrast, as Capcom seems to be distancing itself from the narrative in Okamiden, opting instead to cater to fans who prefer the original storyline.
Anticipation for the Sequel’s Future
While specific dates remain unannounced, players are already hopeful for the game’s release on newer platforms, such as the anticipated Switch 2, promising the return of the unique painting mechanics that have characterized the series.
Community Reactions and Expectations
Okami fans are encouraged to voice their thoughts on the series’ direction. Are they looking forward to a focus on the original narrative, or do they believe that Okamiden deserves recognition in the franchise’s lineage?
