Picture a fusion of New York’s essence with a steampunk aesthetic where safety takes a back seat. This encapsulates the experience of diving into Undermine, the freshly launched zone in World of Warcraft. I spearheaded the design of this zone alongside my incredibly talented colleagues from the WoW team, and I’m excited to share insights about this unprecedented goblin city and its unique driveable vehicles.
Deep Dive, Then D.R.I.V.E.
This update adds an exciting layer to the World of Warcraft gameplay through the introduction of the D.R.I.V.E. feature, which stands for Dynamic and Revolutionary Improvement to Vehicular Experiences. This feature enables players to navigate on roads using the G-99 Breakneck, the game’s version of a hot rod. Players can unlock this vehicle early in their questline by completing “Eyes from Above” and then accepting “No More Walkin’ Here” to begin the Breakneck tutorial.
The design of these vehicles draws heavily from the quirky art style associated with World of Warcraft goblins, showcasing a charmingly haphazard yet clever construction. The G-99 Breakneck embodies exaggerated design elements, such as intense flames from the hood, making it a perfect fit for Undermine’s wild streets.
One of the significant features we’ve aimed to incorporate is the drifting mechanic, reminiscent of classic racing games. This implementation posed some challenges, but it invigorated our team with enthusiasm. Our goal was to recreate that exhilarating feeling of freedom and control that comes with driving your first car.
The car serves a dual purpose, acting as both a mode of transport and a passenger mount for friends, allowing shared exploration of Undermine’s vibrant streets. Players can engage in races, testing their abilities on various tracks, including reverse routes. For those sensitive to high speeds or motion sickness, we provide customizable options like a lower top-speed engine right after unlocking the Breakneck, or the option to stick with standard ground mounts.

Undermine offers a captivating environment for your new vehicle, filled with bustling activity. You’ll witness fellow racers speeding past, enriching the dynamic atmosphere and inviting you to embrace the chaos. Tasks range from delivering quirky items, like hot towels, to confronting a ghostly tiger that disrupts the peace in the city.
As evident, Undermine is teeming with energy. As you navigate your vehicle through the streets (including areas above fighting rings!), you’ll encounter pirates, mobsters, enthusiastic cooks, and numerous other lively characters.
Beneath a cleverly rendered sky lies a city brimming with commerce and culture, specifically designed for goblins. Unlike typical city landscapes in World of Warcraft, Undermine features a densely populated area that feels genuinely lived in as inhabitants go about their daily activities.
The zone exemplifies creativity and ambition, highlighted by locations like Slam Central Station, offering limitless travel options. Undermine is adorned with whimsically named landmarks, such as the Incontinental Hotel and the Gallagio, showcasing a unique culture striving for expansion.
The storyline of Undermine revolves around the theme of improving one’s circumstances, linking seamlessly to the overarching narrative of The War Within. Characters like Orweyna guide players through the Ringing Deeps and the story’s early chapters. You’ll also reconnect with familiar faces, such as Renzik and Gazlowe, who offer insights into the lives of Undermine’s residents. While some, like Gazlowe, sought change elsewhere, others find a sense of belonging in Undermine, illustrating a diverse range of perspectives on home.
As the plot progresses, Gazlowe experiences a transformation, which leads to a revolutionary path for players, empowering them to challenge oppressive forces and reclaim the city. This narrative reinforces the theme of collective strength against tyrannical rule.
