ITS has announced it is the first provider in the UK to successfully trial dedicated internet access services using a 50G passive optical network (PON), both in laboratory settings and with live business customers.
Network Capabilities and Reach
The company operates a full-fibre wholesale network enabled by XGS-PON technology, reaching approximately 25% of the UK. Additional coverage extends through collaborations with partners such as BT Wholesale, Sky, PXC, and Virgin Media Business.
Market Demand and Applications
ITS recognizes a significant demand for business-grade symmetrical 10Gbps services among its clients. The introduction of 50G-PON enhances the capacity to deliver high-performance services efficiently, utilizing existing fibre infrastructure. Potential applications for this technology include supporting 5G implementations, catering to large multi-occupancy buildings, and ensuring that high-speed access is available in urban areas.
This technology is particularly advantageous for dense 5G networks as well as for developing smart cities, where high-bandwidth connectivity is crucial for meeting growing consumer demands.
Technical Advancements
50G-PON technology works alongside existing XGS-PON and GPON networks, enhancing overall bandwidth without requiring further civil construction. This coexistence facilitates a smoother transition to advanced fibre capabilities while minimizing disruptions and costs for business clients needing high-capacity services.
During ITS’s trial, the network achieved impressive measurements of 41.8 Gbps downstream and 19.2 Gbps upstream, successfully using combi-optics to deliver mixed PON services without interrupting ongoing operations.
Future Outlook
Mike Goodwin, the Chief Technology Officer at ITS, conveyed a positive outlook regarding the potential for 50G-PON, asserting that businesses are ready for its implementation ahead of the anticipated 2026-2027 commercial rollout. He emphasized that the focus should be on providing quality products and services, pointing out that 50G-PON meets the necessary standards for success in today’s market.
To support this initiative, ITS is establishing a range of scalable use cases aimed at assisting the rollout of 50G-PON technology. A collaborative trial with Limitless Digital Group is underway, marking the first of several tests planned across the UK to further evaluate this innovative solution.
