Nintendo has begun accepting pre-orders for Switch 2 games as the console pre-orders launch. While browsing the online store, I checked the “Game file size” section and noticed that many upcoming titles require significantly more storage than expected, showing similarities to PC game sizes rather than the smaller file sizes typical of the original Switch ports.
Storage Requirements for Switch 2 Games
The high file sizes are understandable, given that the new console is designed to support 1080p resolution and higher with smooth frame rates. However, even a few titles could fill the built-in 256 GB storage of the Switch 2 quickly. The cumulative file sizes of several upcoming Switch 2 ports surpass 300 GB, indicating a need for additional storage solutions.
Importance of Additional Storage
Investing in expandable storage for a console that isn’t yet in hand may seem impractical, but acquiring a high-capacity microSD Express card is advisable. These cards are faster and more expensive than the microSD cards compatible with the original Switch and other devices like the Steam Deck. It’s important to note that previous microSD cards cannot be used for game storage on the Switch 2, limiting their use to accessing captured screenshots and video clips from the original Switch.
